Dong Dong Sai Gon

March 2020

This is a e-commerce website for Dong Dong Sai Gon - a recycling bad brand. I worked as a “webmaster” bringing a simple elegant website that conveys the company message.

Introduce

“Dòng Dòng”, meaning “to go around” in Saigon accent, is a company that reimagines the life cycle of used tarps from old awnings or truck covers to unique-designed bags.

After 6 months of establishment, the brand needs a website that can convey its brand and let the staff easily manage inventory while keeping the e-commerce experience simple.

Ideate

The first time, we thought of using Shopify, but it has two problems, one is that it charges a 2% fee per purchase while it is not easy to customize to adapt some needed functions.

As a result, I suggested the company use WooCommerce because it is free and self-hosted. Also, it would be easier to implement many features, such as localization with the rich ecosystem of WordPress plugins.

Task

Because it was a new startup, I worked as an only “webmaster” who took care of all things related to digital platforms. I helped them with initial setup, design and implementation, and deployment and third-party setup.

🛠️
Initial setup

I support them with domain purchase with Porkbun and business email setup with Zoho (it’s the best free solution at that time I believed).

👨‍💻
Development

I worked with Mrs. Kieu Anh (founder) and Thao (visual designer) for the website design and implementation. The goal is to make a clean and clear website while keeping the bold and “Saigon” vibe of the brand.

🚀
Deployment and third-party setup

I helped deploy the website into Digital Ocean. We used a $10/month droplet. In this occasion, I got chance to learn about VPS configuration.

Additionally, I set up the Google Analytics and Facebook marketplace sync.

Implementation

I used WordPress CMS and WooCommerce plugin for this website, with a custom handcraft theme using Sass, jQuery. TranslatePress was a plugin for multi language function.
